Bikram Malhar is an outstanding vocalist trained in the pure tradition of Gwalior Gharana and Punjab Gharana by some of the finest teachers. His dynamism not only shines in the creative synthesis of these two traditions in his gayaki but also in his intellectual understanding of deeper nuances of various musical concepts. His musical heritage descends from India’s Great Classical Vocalists Late Pt. Vinayak Rao Patwardhan and Pt. Onkar Nath Thakur of Gwalior Gharana to Late Pt. Balwant Rai Jaswal to his Guru Ji Shri Om Parkash Thapar from Jallandhar. He describes about his meeting with his Guru Ji as one of the most fortunate events in his life. Besides being trained under Guru-Shishya Gharana Parampara, Bikram also holds a Post Graduate Degree in Music and  multiple other qualifications like Sangeet Visharad from two Music Institutes – Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh and Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith, Lucknow. He also holds a diploma in Gurmat Sangeet from Punjabi University, Patiala  and Tabla Visharad from Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh. 

With his wide ranging experience of 25 years in teaching, training, music production, performance, organizing events, writing columns, Bikram has made a mark for himself in both India and Australia. His artistry is not only limited to Khayal Gayaki but also extends to semi-classical and light forms of music and he has been widely appreciated for his emotive, innovative and complex musical style. He has performed at Melbourne Festivals, Boite World Music, Indian Independence Day Festivals, Melbourne Hindustani Classical Music Society, FIMDV Annual Music Concerts, Vibrations of the Heart concert and has composed music for a Melbourne based Hindi feature film and short films too. He is regularly invited to give seminars on Indian Classical Music at Box Hill TAFE. 

 

Currently, Bikram is tirelessly engaged in training the next generation of artists through his music school where the highest standards of Indian Classical music meet the rich tradition of gharanas.
